Why is it Illegal to hunt squirrel’s with a pellet gun NC?
Why is it illegal to hunt squirrels in NC with a pellet gun? I mean a 1,000 fps .177 cal pellet gun will do just has good has a .22. Any anti-hunting comments will be flagged.

jonthepain answers:
A .177 pellet at 1,000fps is about 1/10th as powerful as a 22lr.
Your air rifle fires a 6gr pellet at 1,000fps and generates around 10 ft-lb of energy max.
A 22lr on the other hand fires a 40gr bullet at 1,080 fps and produces 104 ft-lb of energy.
Just because the velocity is the same.. That doesn’t mean the power is the same. That’s why hunting with small caliber air guns is not legal in many states.

John asks…
Do i have to go on a hunting ground or can i just go find a place and just hunt on my own in NC?
Me and a friend were going to go hunting but the hunting prices are INSANE. i am new to this so can we just find a place or what?

jonthepain answers:
If on private property, you need permision from the owner and a document to prove such. If you own the property, you have your own permission, but all game laws apply no matter where you are. You cannot just go wherever you want, especially if there are POSTED signs or NO TRESPASSING signs. If it is state land with no signs, you should be ok, though.
So, in theory, you can go almost anywhere on private property, with permission and a valid license.

what is the best gun for hunting deer in nc?
whant is the best deer gun for hunt deer in nc

jonthepain answers:
So many right answers.
I prefer a bolt action 30-06. A remington or winchester is ideal. A kimber rocks.
I like the 30-06 because it is versitile, and ammo is easy to find. If all you shoot is Deer, then a .308 is great also. I just like the extra power and versatility in an ought 6.
The most popular top 3 hunting rifle calibers in the US today are as follows
1) 30-06
2) .308
3) .270
Not by much though. I never did like the .270, but it it a bit flatter than the ought 6. A bit light for Elk, Moose, and Bear, but for Deer it rocks.
All the mags are great, just expensive to shoot.

Maria asks…
Deer hunting in Charlotte, NC area?
I am potentially going to be relocating down to the northern Charlotte, NC area from Northern NJ. Every year I look forward to my favorite time of the year, deer season. Does anyone know anything about deer hunting down in this area. Up North, my buddies and I hunt on private land that we own and live on. I have never hunted public land because it seems liek it would be too crowded and dangerous. Is taht all I will be able to do down there? Are there hunting clubs I could hook up with some guys? Obviously, I am not going to know that many people down there at first, but I love hunting. Any info anyone has to share I would really appreciate it.

jonthepain answers:
If you dislike hunting on public land, when you relocate to NC, go to the local archery shops and locally owned sporting goods stores. There you should be able to locate a lease that is needing a member or two. Every year members are needed in most clubs for some reason or another. If there is several available, get the shop owners to recomend one to you. They are like everything else, some are fair, and some are great. Most leases that need members will post it in these places. You are going to love southern hunting. Most states have long seasons and liberal bag limits. In my state we have a 4 month gun season, and a bow season that is almost 6 months long, if you hunt the different areas that it is open in. I start bowhunting Sept.20 and bowhunt until Feb. 15 Our limit is 6 deer per year, but if you have a lease that is on the D-map program, you are allotted extra doe tags that do not count against your total for the year. For instance your club may be allotted 40 extra doe tags to be used during that year. I’m sure you are going to love the hunting in NC- good luck!
