Your Questions About Coyote Hunting Dogs

Richard asks…

can Catahoula Leopard Dogs be used in coyote hunting?

please no people who are against hunting

jonthepain answers:

Yes, as can the Carolina dog, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why you would want to.

Helen asks…

I want to get a small dog for coyote hunting?

My house is small ani can’t have a big retriever or lab?what is the smallest possible dog that could kill a coyote?

jonthepain answers:

There is a lot of coyote hunting with dogs in my state. But the dogs have to run in packs, because here is what will happen to a lone dog if you attempt to hunt coyotes with him.

No matter how big, mean or vicious a single dog is, the coyotes have a tactic that works to perfection against a single dog. The coyote, unless he is trapped will will not fight a dog alone. But when there are two coyotes, one will engage the dog and the other will come in from behind, as the dog wheels to confront his attacker, the other coyote will come in and attack while the dog is busy, again causing the dog to turn and confront the coyote. The dog does not last no time, and the fight goes to the coyotes.

You need to forget about a single dog hunting coyotes, even if he is a Mastiff.

Mandy asks…

Sounds like hundreds of dogs yapping all together?

I know all our neighbor so I know theirs not a big enough concentration of dogs to make such a noise. but I went outside and all the sudden it sounds like hundreds of little dogs are barking/screaming, and its coming over the hill – all from one place – from our neighbors house. Coyotes? hunting dogs? what do you think?
i’m in a small neighborhood with the houses placed about 400 yards apart out in the country.

jonthepain answers:

Probably coyotes. I have a pack in my neighborhood, and it’s always sounds like there are more of them than there actually are. It’s quite chilling to have them around, really, but there’s nothing you can do.

David asks…

Coyote hunting?

i live on 16 acres w/ about 75 acres and a mile strech of powerlines behind us and there are countless coyotes out there and im afriad that they will get my two small dogs
once i shoot one down what do i do with it i want to get mounted but what should i do w/ the other ones and the meat
if your an anti-hunter bother someone else

jonthepain answers:

Most taxidermist tell you to just stick the whole animal in a freezer if you have a freezer large enough if not call the taxidermist you plan to use and most likely he will wont you to dope it off at his shop as is and in most cases un-skinned ASAP, they prefer too skin the animal them selves so as not to deal with any damage hides.

As to the other coyotes, you will have to shoot them first.
Most coyotes come in in singles or pairs and once you fire the other will be on the move quick.
But if you do shoot more then one just drag them off out of sight of roads and or houses and just let nature take its course if you don’t wont to skin and tan the other hides your self.

The meat is not worth eating so just let the other scavengers have it.
They need food also.

Coyotes do feed on Domestic Dogs and Cats.
I have been hunting them for 40 years.
DO NOT hang the coyote on a fence most states require you remove it and keep it out of sight of any roads because it just upsets the public.
Most states have it in their game laws that any game or predator shot near a road be removed ASAP so as not to insight the public that would be offended by the sight of a Dead or Dieing animal.
If you wont to hang a trophy do so in your house not the fence, that is part of what caused most of the trouble hunters face today from the public and privet land owners.
Most cattlemen do not like any thing hung on their fences that they did not hang personally.
I was born and raised on a large ranch and any one we caught doing this lost all hunting privileges, for it only damaged our fence.
That is part of being a “Ethical Hunter” while enjoying your rights you don’t willfully violate others rights.
It is called Respecting others.

Ken asks…

Im looking for a place to coyote hunt on private ground in Colorado?

Me and a friend are going to be heading to Colorado in two weeks. We both really enjoy coyote hunting, but in my area alot of people run dogs and the coyotes are scared of everything. We both respect the outdoors and have many years of hunting experience and would be more than happy to cure any coyote problems that anyone may have. (or give it my best shot anyway).

Your Questions About Predator Calls For Sale

Joseph asks…

What can I do to help?

I was watching MSNBC (I think) the one with Chris Hansen, he does “To Catch a Predator“.

Anyway, It was a documentary called, “Children For Sale“. It was the saddest thing I think I’ve ever seen. It was about children in Cambodia as young as 5 years old being sold for sex to tourists and Natives. I mean dozens of different brothels with dozens of really YOUNG children being sold for sex. It was unbelievable, I can not even wrap my brain around it! I can not believe there is a market somewhere for that and there is barley any attempt made to protect these children. I am F***ing furious, I don’t think I have cried so hard or so long in forever. I haven’t seen anything like that and I seriously feel like my heart is broken. I feel an overwhelming need to do something, somehow. The thing is, I don’t know how to start. I don’t know what I could do. Does anyone have any ideas???
Is there a way to change the section? Y!A auto picked the section for me, I guess.
Also, thank you for your answers so far. They really help.

jonthepain answers:

Visit this site: http://www.freetheslaves.net/Page.aspx?pid=183

It gives information about modern slavery and has an area for how you can help.

BTW, this is in the wrong section.

EDIT – you cannot change the section, but if you want more answers you can repost again, this time making sure to change the “default” section that Y!A puts it in.

Thank you to those who are taking my question seriously! I know that I can not save the world, I know there are other things going on in the world that are just as horrific if not more so. I know I get really worked up over these things and I know I can only make a small ping, but I would have to say it is better than being cold and heartless all together and just giving up on humanity.

jonthepain answers:

Don’t be so straightforward in your story telling.

You have to add twists and interesting word selection to keep the reader interested. You know what I felt while reading this poem? That I knew each line that would come next, there is no element of suprise, no poetic imagery. This is a hard thing to do when penning a story in a poem.

This would work better as prose if you ask me.

Carol asks…

Need some expert RES advice – When a ‘couple’ of turtles turns out to be 4, and nothing you were told is true?

I admit it- I’m a sucker…
A friend of a friend of a friend of a friend was re-homing a ‘couple’ of RES, and idiot that I am, I agreed to take them- BUT ONLY they were acclimated to an outdoor pond. I was assured me that this would be fine, but (here’s a shocker) umm, not so much. Here’s what I ended up with:

1. a “couple of turtles” turned out to be 4: 3 females (about 6″ shell) & 1 male (4″).
2. The assumption they’d be fine outside was apparently based on wishful thinking and a burning desire to dump these guys on someone else.
3. They refuse to eat turtle pellets or vegetation (I’ve tried romaine, zuchini, squash and dandilion green ) but they will eat worms. Getting some feeder fish today…
4. Did I mention they were ‘re-homed’ 3 months ago? At a garage sale.
5. They showed up at my work in a cardboard box with an almost empty can of turtle food. Nothing else. Not even names.

So now what? I need both a short term and a long term solution- payday isn’t for another week, so WHATEVER I do, it can’t cost more than $100 today.

So the big question:
WITHOUT risking their health- does anyone have any ideas how to house them in the existing outdoor pond? They are TOTALLY unprepared to hibernate- in fact, I doubt they’ve ever been outside. I can’t imagine trying to heat the pond for them over the winter- even if I could afford the electricity (which I doubt), I don’t know if it’s possible- it’s about 10′ in diameter, bowl-shaped, poured concrete, about 2 1/2 foot deep at its lowest point. I live in the Seattle area, so temps will dip to the mid 30′s at night for the next 6 months. We probably won’t see the sun again until May, so basking will also be an issue. The filter system is built in; a basic re-circulating pump with a filter at the top of the waterfall and at the base of the pump so it can’t be removed. Unless someone can think of something I haven’t, I think they need to be indoors for the winter.

Which brings me to my next problem.
I have NOTHING to house them indoors, and my Craigslist search for anything that could possibly work was unsuccessful. At best, I have a kiddie pool (it’s shaped like a turtle, so that’s something….) but these guys should have a minimum of 240+ gallons of water, plus basking areas. I have a big house, so room isn’t a problem, but I don’t even have a heater or a filtration system…

Somebody has to have an idea. These guys aren’t going anywhere- they’re here and they’re staying. By next spring they’ll be in turtle heaven with a pond, grass, basking ledges, sand to lay eggs and 2 watchful beagles to protect them from predators, but it’s not spring now.

I’ve thought of stock tanks, old bathtubs, rubbermaid containers- nothing seems like it will have enough room, and I couldn’t find any of them, anyway. And a filtration system for that many turtles (and that much water) is out of my budget for at LEAST another 3 weeks. Do I use the pool and change the water daily? Sacrifice swimming room for clean water? It’s probably only 10″ deep filled to the top, but I can build basking areas around the pool and “fence” it in.

OK, fire away. But please- don’t tell me to call the humane society or to find them another ‘suitable’ home- I counted 25 turtles AND tanks on Craigslist today- most of them free. These 4 are staying right here. Just need some help making sure they’re OK
Thanks
Ok, regarding the suggestion of ‘release’… They’re not a native species. RES are considered a invasive species here, due 100% because of this very thing. Eastern and Western pond turtles are native- the closest natural occurring population of RES to Seattle is Kansas. Releasing an animal into a habitat that it DOESN’T belong in creates a multitude of problems: if they ARE able to adapt, there is added compitition put on the native species for resources, which ultimately results in their extermination by USFW. Most likely, however, they are unable to find needed resources or adapt to the environment and slowly starve to death. PLEASE, I beg you, NEVER suggest this. If you FIND an animal, leave it where it is, but if it has been bred in captivity or has been acclimated to humans- release spells death. Period. I hope I haven’t offended anyone, but I work at a wildlife rehabilatation Center, plus I have a degree in conservation education, so I promise you- this is the reality. Ot

jonthepain answers:

Those turtle-shaped pools are large enough for one of the turtles. For the others, head for the hardware store to buy a stiff plastic wading pool. You can get a 6′ diameter one for $25 or thereabouts. An old bathtub might work for two of them.

Instead of feeder fish, try bait fish. Cheaper. Liver is good too. So are earthworms. You can also feed up to 50% dark green leafy vegetables or bright orange ones.

Your Questions About Hunting Videos Bow

Robert asks…

How do i use a bow? Im going to start bow hunting and do not know tricks, tips, i need advice?

I am going to start bow hunting this season, and i have no clue what im doing with a bow.
Any tips, or videos i can watch on the internet for begginers. I shot my first dear last year with a slug shot, and loved it now im ready to take a step up.

jonthepain answers:

When tree stand hunting cut and attach branches of the local greenery to the lower areas of your stand. This serves two purposes:
it provides natural Camouflage and
it provides some natural scent to use as cover.
Be sure to attach in such a way as to not hinder your firing lanes
The preferred shot placement is a heart/lung shot with the animal quartering *away* from you. This area will be behind the shoulder blade and down midway of the body.
If the animal seems extremely cautious then it may have picked up scent or movement coming from the hunter. In this case it may be wise to aim a little lower than normal to counteract the effect of the deer jumping the string.
Whitetail deer *almost* always crouch prior to springing away from any sudden noise, and many hunters have watched as the perfectly placed arrow flies straight over the animal’s back!

If time is not a critical factor then wait to release the shot until the animal is taking a step and one of the front legs is in the air. This will lessen its ability to crouch and jump before the arrow hits.
Always pull to full draw with the bow sighted above your target because it takes less energy to lower the sight to the target than it does to bring it up to the target. This translates into a smoother more powerful pattern with a better ability to hold the pull for long periods of time.
Noise and scent are by far the two worst enemies that a Bowhunter can have. Removing human scent from your clothing and body is much more effective than a cover scent will ever be. This does not imply that cover scents are useless but if you are sweaty or spilled gas on your boots filling up the truck then all the doe pee in the world won’t fool that Big Buck! Be sure to bathe thouroughly in a non-scent type soap each time you plan to hit the woods. Other common mistakes are cooking/standing near a the fire/coming into contact with anything that has a strong odor while wearing the gear that you plan to hunt in. Noise is also a bigger factor in Bowhunting than other methods simply because of the effective range. While many people will boast that they have accurate ranges comparable to that of Robin Hood lore, the fact is that most successful kills with a bow are taken with 5-30 yard shots. Take each piece of equipment that you have and do everything possible to eliminate any noise that it makes. Moleskin placed anywhere that may come into contact with an arrow works wonders. String silencers, rubber grommets at accessory mounting points, and loctite on all threads are good noise reducing methods. Don’t forget your tree stand or clothing either, imagine that monster buck hightailing it out of sight after you stood up and the stand creaked or your jacket makes a scraping noise against the tree. A good rule of thumb is that if you can hear your fingernail scraping against the clothing then it is too noisy.
Above all else….Practice, Practice, Practice. Know your target, know your abilities and ranges. When preparing for the season the first project is to work on form. Make sure that you are smooth on the draw and that the anchor point and release are consistent. Get your patterns down to as small as possible ( if you can’t get consistent patterns under 4″ at a certain range then you have no business taking the shot at that range). Others may dispute the 4″ size up and down but the bottom line is that any animal that you wound and do not recover is wasted and as such it becomes fuel for the anti-hunting fires! Once you are comfortable at the distances you plan to hunt then start shooting out of the your stand from the height you plan on being opening morning. Practice with as much realism as possible. If you can, simulate real situations with foam targets partially hidden or in tight quarters. Simulate the terrain where you hunt, whether it is wide open plains or thick cover. Last but certianly not least, practice in full gear. It will be very frustrating going for that shot of a lifetime only to find out that the headnet you just bought has a wire that covers your sight line at full draw, or the jacket has buttons that catch the string on release! Judging range also seems to be one of the biggest problems that Bowhunters have in the field. Practice range estimation in terrain like that which you intend to hunt. A good tidbit to consider is to set your sights and learn your ranges based on your personal stride ie set a pin for 10 strides (full leg extension when walking should be ~ 1 yard depending on your body dimensions) this will eliminate the worry of forgetting the old tape measure on scouting trips, etc. Because your measuring device will always be your stride.
Remember…..
You can NEVER practice enough…. Consistency is the key to success ….. Words to live by!

Mark asks…

I know nothing of hunting but want to learn. What’s a good way to start?

My dad never really took me out to do anything as a kid, and now that I’m married I would love to get into an outdoor hobby, and hunting would be great because I love the woods, camping, and venison. I have no experience firing a rifle or bow (I believe mainly bow hunting is allowed in the state of NJ where I live, but I could be wrong). If there are any books or videos someone could recommend I would appreciate it.

jonthepain answers:

Well the easiest way is to find someone who does and ask questions. Also look up your state game and fish and read the regulations. They would also show the different hunting areas and you can request topographic maps for a fee.

Carol asks…

Hunting with Matthew’s Compound Bow (65 lbs bow pull)?

I got some good experience with bows, but this is my first time hunting with it. So is the 65 pound bow pull a 1 hit kill? I saw a video of Brock lesnar hunting white bulks with his matthews bow, he got 2 shots, but the first shot I think was in the legs.

We are in the car right now, using my iphone, waiting for my other friends, they got lost in the traffic.

jonthepain answers:

Yes with a good broadhead 65 pound is adequate to take a deer if the shot is place right and the distance is not extreme. For example a double lung hit at about 20 to 30 yards just behind shoulder.

Donald asks…

questions on deer hunting?

I’ve used riffles and hand guns most my life, but never used them to hunt so I have no idea.

I’m interested in hunting deer, A bow looks like it would be the most fun to learn and develop skills plus it seems the most challenging to get the deer. What I’m wondering is, will an arrow take down a deer fairly quickly, follow up with a 9mm the the head?
I’ve watched a ton of hunting video’s and it seems the deer don’t die right away. I don’t see hunters that attempt head shots, why is this? If you shot a deer in the heart or lungs do hunters finish it off with a follow up shot.
I dislike it when they are injured and kicking around.
ahahahahahhahhahhahahhahha !!!!!!! I just got out of the military! How you think I have all that
experience with weapons. Only a ignorant, inexperienced tards like you make ridiculous statements like that. Oh you care about the innocent animals, well you have better dawn well be a vegetarian to make that statement. If you eat meat your worse than a hunter as a hunter can appreciate what he kills, not just pickup piece of meat at the super market, and not even think about the cow that was killed for your life.

jonthepain answers:

Deer often manage to run off before dying, even with a well placed shot to the heart and/or lungs. They are strong, fast, and their adrenalin gets going and that’s how they manage to do what they do while they’re bleeding out.
Don’t take a pistol bow hunting, you may run into some legal issues. If you must, just give it another arrow.
You don’t want to go for a head shot because they’re easy to miss, and when you miss bad things happen. Besides spoiling your hunt, you can take their jaw off, or ears, or blind them, and not even come close to killing them. Only if you are positive on your marksmanship and not provided a heart/lung shot should you even attempt to make a head or neck shot.
As for an injured animal struggling, nobody sane likes that. But it’s a possibility. If you can’t tolerate even a slim chance of a poorly placed shot and a struggling animal, you shouldn’t be hunting. It’s something many of us have had to deal with, and you need to keep your cool and do the right thing as soon as possible. If you practice your marksmanship as often as possible and use your common sense, a misplaced shot becomes less and less likely.
I’m not sure if servicemen are required to get hunter’s safety certification in your state, but it sounds like you could benefit from it. You learn all the basic tricks of the trade, local laws, and safety measures that military firearms training doesn’t pertain to.

Your Questions About Coyotes Hunting Deer

Charles asks…

What is a good place for hunting:wild pig deer, and coyotes?

I live in LA and i want to find a spot in CA that is great for hunting.so far i went to Fort Hunter Liggette and i thought it was great.they had a lot of wild life. Then i went to Cleveland national forest and i did not like it.i saw deer and all but i couldnt find a spot that allowed hunting….so plzz help!!!

jonthepain answers:

The best place for hunting is asking farmers and ranchers if ya can hunt on their land when the animals listed are in season. Up north is a bit better too, i have a friend that came from northern california and he hunted his whole life and killed a bunch of stuff on ranchers land and got paid for it!(coyotes and feral pigs)

Richard asks…

what is the best rifle for coyote and deer hunting?

i have been looking for the best rifle for coyote hunting but can also be used as a deer rifle. thanks to anyone who answers

jonthepain answers:

IMO a 30-06 or .270 is going to be your best bet for deer and yotes. I shoot a Remington 700 .270 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15X40 which is a perfect deer and yote setup for me.

Linda asks…

Should I get a shotgun or a rifle to hunt deer coyotes and foxes?

Because I already have a .22 rifle and a 12 gauge. So what kind of gun would be best for me that’s in the $350-$450 range?

jonthepain answers:

If already have a 12 gauge then why need another shotgun ? , 10 gauge ammo not that common ; get a 30-06 semi-auto rifle and good scope , bolt actions ARE NOT more accurate.
Ah one above typing in while i typing in , and 30-06 capable of taking out some fairly large game ( from small to large ) with large game use heavy grain bullets

James asks…

which one is better for hunting deer and coyotes, a 6.5 Grendel or a 6.8 spc?

i was wondering what yalls opinion was. i was also wondering if there are any good looking tactical rifles that handle these cartridges. i was also wondering if you could give a rifle with good accuracy

jonthepain answers:

The ballistics of the 6.5 grendel is better at range, but it really doesn’t matter that much to most shooters. Both are going to be hard to find and expensive, though I think the 6.8 spc is just a tad more available. Either will kill deer, though you have to be careful with your bullet selection. Make sure and avoid FMJ’s if you can.

Personally, I wouldn’t get these rounds unless I reloaded my own ammo (I do). I’ve always wanted to get a rifle in 6.8 spc . . . . Never knew why that over the grendel. Maybe later when I can afford it.

You are going to find the AR-15 to be the most versatile in regard to making it look different and general accessories. I think an AR with a quad-rail,fore grip, iron sites with a co-witnessing aimpoint look great, but that is just me.

Mandy asks…

Would a Mossberg 100 ATR in a .243 Win be a good choice for hunting deer and coyote in North Georgia?

I live in North Georgia, and don’t have much money in the rifle budget. I want a rifle big enough to kill deer cleanly, but not so big that it will destroy the pelts on coyotes that I hunt. I don’t live far from a rifle range, so practice is not a problem. I want to get it before summer so I can get accurate with it before the season starts in the fall.

jonthepain answers:

Should do……..243 is about the smallest you want to use for whitetail though, and even then sometimes can be questionable.

Your Questions About Hog Hunting

Sharon asks…

Hog Hunting ?

I am a die hard hunter, and enjoy the great sport. But, I completely disagree with southern style of hog hunting where the hog is cornered by the hunters, then bit and held down with dogs, then the hunters move in the stab the hog with a knife. This results in a slow death for the hog. Remember, I am a hunter myself, and rifle hunt and bow hunt every year. But do any hunters out there agree with me that this type of ”hunting” is wrong ?

jonthepain answers:

Number one dont say “southern style” as if thats a disagreeable thing, its done many places

Number two, if you are a “die hard hunter” then you should recognize that if its a legal method approved to take animals, particularly in this case a “domestic or feral destructive” specie, then you should not be trying to stir up dissension among the ranks of hunters.

Some people just dont get it – the antis LOVE to create infighting among hunters – divide and conquer. Whether its bear over bait, hounds, dove hunts etc – WE NEED TO STICK TOGETHER for the sake and future of our sport!

Lizzie asks…

hog hunting?

i heard a story form a buddy of mine of a few doegs he heard of for hog hunting… he described them as really small dogs, with very long interlocking teeth that tend to clamp onto the hog‘s ears when they hunt them, i rmemeber the name had the word jack in it… but it wasnt a jack russel terrier… anyone know waht tehy are?

jonthepain answers:

Most outfitters that use dogs for hunting are a breed called Cathoulas, also know as leopard dogs.

Maria asks…

Any suggestions on taking a hog hunting trip on a budget?

Me and some friends would like to go hog hunting in the coming future. My friends don’t really have a lot of extra money so we are trying to find a way to do this cheaply. We live in northern illinois and the it seems like the cheapest states to get out of state licenses would be maybe florida or georgia. Would any of you recommend a public hunting place you have experience with? Or would anyone like some free hog removal from their own land? Thanks for any help

jonthepain answers:

Northeast Texas is swarming with feral hogs (wild). In Texas you can hunt nuisance animals (wild hogs and coyotes) with out an out of state license with the land owners permission. If you hunt on type 2 or Corps of Engineer land, you have to buy a license and thier permit. Spotlighting is also legal for hunting hogs. The local game warden would like a courtesy call to let them know what you are doing so they don’t respond to a spotlighting call from a neighbor or passer buy. Let the land owner make the call because some local wardens like to make thier own laws instead of enforcing the ones on the books and will tell you that you do need a license. It is also legal to bait hogs in Texas and they love corn. You can go on-line and get a list of counties in ne Texas along with the phone numbers to the extension agents of said county and they will be able to tell you of farmers in thier county who would like for someone to rid them of a few pigs. You can also run dogs on pigs in Texas. Most places in ne Texas are only a few miles from a lake or state park campground where you can camp cheap or free. State parks charge an entry fee. More than likely you would be able to camp on sight. I live in Titus county and there is a local meat processer who charges $60 or $65 to process your pig. Good luck and Happy Hunting.

Sandra asks…

What breed is the best kind for hog hunting?

What kind of breeds and what techniques are best to train them for hog hunting?

jonthepain answers:

The best breed for hog hunting is a catahoula cur. Ihave hunted this breed for years and they have good noses for finding the hogs and they have enough grit and stamina to bay and catch the hogs. Some will use the curs to find and bay then release a pitt to catch and hold the hog until you get there to catch or kill the hog. I usually carry the catch dog on my 4-wheeler until the currs get the hog bayed so the pitt does not get to winded. To answer your question I wolud get a few currs as your hunt and bay dogs and use the pitt as your catch dog. I hope this helps you and I hope you have as much fun as I do….

Michael asks…

Does anyone know where I can find good feral hog hunting in Texas?

I’ve been looking around, but it seems the only feral hog hunting I can find in Texas is guided. I’m not interested in paying someone to hunt on their land as Texas is host to a vast ammount of public hunting land. It would be great if someone could help direct me to some decent public hunting grounds for feral hogs.

jonthepain answers:

Talk to some landowners around Laredo. Many are eager to have feral hogs killed because they are so overpopulated and destructive. Of course, convincing the landowner to let you on his property with a gun will require that you be very convincing of your intentions to respect his property and abide by his rules. Take a drive down there and go to some local coffee shops, feed stores, etc., and meet some people…..you’ll probably end up with several places to hunt if you play your cards right.

Your Questions About Coyote Calling Sequence

Mark asks…

Has anybody made and used the el cheapo coyote call?

If you have used this call or any other home made MP3 call please let me know if you had any luck. If so what exact calling sequences did you use? I need to download a sequence that will work. I have never had one come in to my calls that I downloaded on varmintals.com
. However I have not tried that many times. When I do I use his 16 min sequence and all I can get is coyotes howling in the distance. How can I get them to come in? Are they howling to warn others that they see me or what. They howl for about 30 seconds and than stop and don’t come in. Please help.

jonthepain answers:

When coyotes howl and bark at you, refusing to come in, it means your busted. They already know your there. Check out your camo and your set up. Place your call well away from you and hunt like your hunting turkey or deer. Any movement will give your position away. This time of year is the coyote rut. Try female invitation howls. Works every time. (almost) good luck.

Sandy asks…

Is there any good sites to download MP3 coyote sequences that are proven to work?

I have downloaded some sequences and all that happens when I play them is coyotes howl in the distance and don’t come in. They only howl for about 30 to 60 seconds and stop. I stay very still and nothing. I try to keep calling for about one hour and still nothing. Are they on to me? What MP3 calls will work best in northern Utah in the desert? Please Help

jonthepain answers:

You need to go to Varmint Al’s site:

http://www.varmintal.com/coy5-20.htm

His mp3 calls are proven to work and he even tells you how to use them. How long you been hunting yotes?

Steven asks…

Coyote Huning questions?

I live in SW Virginia. Some people on the land I hunt are saying coyotes are howling at night and I have seen a few myself as well as leaving a deer carcass in the field and the next day being on the other side dismantled. I have just recently bought a rabbit in distress and primos double whammy coyote call. I want to start coyote hunting. I have a spotlight and a 22-250 that I know my way around. What would be the best times to hunt them?(sundown, midnight, etc.) How would I go about hunting them?(setup, calling sequence and frequency) Does anyone have any other info I should know besides this? Thanks!

jonthepain answers:

Make sure night hunting is legal in your state and for predators you will need a red filter on your light.

First thing in the morning and last thing at night are generally the best times to call coyotes. Randy Anderson has a series of videos called Calling All Coyotes and has in the last few years joined with Primos to make some more DVDs. They are very good instruction and are only about $15 or so and they are quite long for a hunting DVD.

Generally I’ll set up and start distressing calling fairly softly making a Waaaa, waaaa, waaa sound. Much like a baby crying but shorter because a rabbit has much smaller lungs, right? Call for 10 seconds or so, then wait 30 seconds. Call 10 seconds and wait 30 again. Then I’ll wait 3 or 4 minutes and watch for coyotes coming in. Repeat this for 30 minutes or so and if you don’t have any activity, move to another spot.

Ruth asks…

ok heres an idea for all people wanting to know about electronic coyote calls?

ok heres what you do… get an mp3 player or an ipod (which is what i use) and then go to varmintal website and download the calls he has plus the calling sequences, then go to gander mountain and get a calling speaker that they have set up for their preditor hunting electronic calls and just plug it into your ipod, go out into the field and play it, it perfect won’t cost you more than $60.00 compared to a $250.00 system at hunting stores, it rocks and i’ve killed alot of em that way

Thanx

Carol asks…

Going coyote hunting tomorrow, witch of these calls should I use in the area Im hunting?

Wich of these free calls that I downloaded from www.varmintal.com would have the best results in Northern Utah in February? Are the coyotes mateing? Are the pups leaving the den?

Last time I went out I used the 16 min sequence on varmintals site. I had coyotes howling and barking in the distance but they did not come in. I think they knew I was there. So I camouflaged my gun, bought coon urine scent cover, and a cotton tail rabbit decoy. I’m going to go try again tomorrow, but I want to make my own calling sequence using the free calls on www.varmintal.com. What whould be the best and how much time should I leave between each call?

P.S. If you have time please listen to some of the calls and see if they are good or if they are a waist of time. They have success stories on the site so I have hope that the mp3 will work for me. And let me know if the calls in the 16 min sequence are good for my area and if there is enough time between each call. (I think it is like 2 min salience)

Thank you very much

jonthepain answers:

Electronic calls work great
i use both mouth calls and electronic
if the dogs hang outside of range and howl they know u r there or have been hunted so much they are wary
that is when tapes / cds are best
they can emulate sounds that are difficult to copy by mouth such as a baby woodpecker or fighting raccoons
there are also better times of the day to call , depending on your area
mating is january through february , pups wont be out for some time
yotes pack up this time of year and sometimes come to call in fours and fives
using calls that others have not used is sometimes the key to hanging dogs
anything that entices their hunger over and above their fear works
just need to experiment
it can be frustrating but when you figure it out it is worth it

Your Questions About Boar Hunting Tips

Linda asks…

Basics and Tips on Javalina (Wild Boar) Hunting in Texas?

I want to go wild boar hunting but I can’t really find any super good information about it. I live in the Austin area and I just want to know to go about hunting boars , basics I should know and tips from personal hunts

jonthepain answers:

Eli, the answer H gave you has alot of good info on the javelinas. If your wanting to hunt boars; there are alot of areas near Austin where you will find Feral Hog hunts. The male feral hog has are known as boars and can be very large. Hunting them can be done a variety of ways; stand hunting with a rifle, stalking with a pistol, running them with dogs and using a knife, and something I just got to try this past spring was a dog and spear hunt. Feral hogs are increasing in numbers all over the state. We have even found them on the Rio Grand between Del Rio and Big Bend now. In south east Texas and in parts of Louisiana there are some of the original Russian boars that were brought here during the settling of the republic.

If this is a first trip for you, go online and look for the guides and hunts in the Kerrville area. You can get affordable hunts and there available year round. There is no limit on feral hogs in the state. For Javelina your allowed two per license year. Good luck and good hunting.

Maria asks…

Tips on hog hunting…?

I’m kind of new at hog hunting. I’ve got a few attractants and I know the jist oh boar hunting in Fla. I was just wondering on any tips that are out there to help me get one before it gets too hot.
Thanks a lot!

jonthepain answers:

Hogs have horrible eyesite (but excellent smell and hearing). If you are downwind and they see you just freeze and sit still for a moment.

Hogs travel in a roughly circular pattern and cover the same ground roughly every 5 days foraging. Get a sense of what that pattern is and it becomes easier to meat your meat on an idle Tuesday.

Make sure you have enough gun for close encounters.

Take a machete in case you drop your rifle running for your life. It happens more than you know.

Do yourself a favor and get a diagram of the pigs anatomy. The location of the heart is NOT like other animals and is lower in the chest cavity.

Learn what a shoulder plate is and why it’s important to know. Use that knowledge.

Eat everything but the oink…

Best of luck!

Richard asks…

help with boar hunting please?

i am going boar hunting in tennessee with my dad. i am going to use my 30-30 and he is going to use his 12 Gauge sabot shotgun or maybe share my rifle.

i have been trying to find things about hunting wild boar and i can’t find much. i think they are considered dangerous game because i have heard that they will attack people. so are they?

and i was also wondering if i need to shoot them in the head or behind the shoulder like most other game animals. i am planning on getting a razorback or a wild russian boar. hopefully a mature male (obviously)

this is also my first time hunting wild boar and the biggest thing i have killed was a 7 point mature buck (i haven’t been hunting for too long so no comments on my 7 pointer).

were also planning on stalking the animal in the woods.

are there any tips or info we should know before we go?

i was also wondering how boar is scored?

jonthepain answers:

Google – ‘hog blog’ for shot placements. They have a really good discussion on their site on shot placement for hogs. They favor neck shots (which is what I’ve started doing if I have a resting animal.) Head shots can be tricky because they have pretty tough skulls and only a tiny bit of it is filled with brain. Heart shots can be tricky too because the heart sits so far forward and low.

I’ve never heard of scoring boars. People either go for meat or a big boar with large tusks.
Personally I hunt for meat – so smaller pigs.

Carol asks…

How Do you Hunt a boar, fish a shark or be able to climb up the ancient staircase on the Sims 2: Castaway?

i cant figure out how to do any of these. Any tips?

jonthepain answers:

To hunt a boar you have to chase it around with a spear and annoy it. If it leaves the area you have to find another one and start again. When it is annoyed enough it will attack you. Make sure you are holding a spear. It will fight you and if you win you will get a ham, boar tusks and leather.

To fish a shark you need a fishing pole. You take the pole out of the inventory and choose to Fish with it. Wait until the red bobble goes down into the water and then Reel In. Sharks are best caught at night and the best place is at Tidal Pool. I also like fishing for sharks in the centre pool on Crystal Island.

To climb up the ancient stairway you need high body skill (9 or 10) and also plenty of energy. Have a good sleep and then eat a meal of spices to give you an energy boost.

Your Questions About Wild Hog Hunting Oklahoma

Donald asks…

Cost of nonresidential wild hog tag in oklahoma?

I’m from Missouri and want to hunt hogs in ok. What does a tag cost, and what else will I need?
What tag would I need? I am hunter certified and 13.
Ok. I’m 13 tho…..soo could I get a licence?

jonthepain answers:

There are no tags. Feral pig is viewed as an non-native invasive pest species. No tag, no bag limit, no season. All you would need is a general hunting license.

David asks…

how do you hunt hog in Oklahoma?

i live in Oklahoma and we have wild hogs tearing up our deer hunting land Ive hunted the same area for the past 7 years and Ive always seen deer, but now the more rooting areas Ive seen the less deer i see because the hogs are running them out of the area. i would just switch areas but i get a deer every time i go out and im not leaving this prime area without a fight.im just trying to find out the best and most effective way to hunt them so i can clear them out of my area asap

jonthepain answers:

Hunt them at night with lights over bait. An alternate route may be to trap them – if legal where you are.

Other options include spot and stalk hunting during the day, or sitting near a bait pile.

Be sure to check your local laws about what is legal in yor state.

Lisa asks…

where would i find a northeast oklahoma farmer with a wild boar infestation?

My brother and i are looking for a farmer in northern oklahoma (preferably north east oklahoma) who has a hog infestation and would allow us to hunt there.

jonthepain answers:

GL with it. I did an OK boar hunt a couple years ago, cost $400/gun for the permission from the guy that had the hunting lease. From the “plague like” population of wild pigs, after 10 days of HARD hunting, we found 1.

Find someone with dogs, it seems to increase your success rate many times over.

Richard asks…

What is a good Christmas present for a 14 year-old boy that likes to hunt?

It’s my husband’s younger cousin who lives in Oklahoma. I think he hunts deer, wild turkey and wild hog. Is there any kind of hunting gadget or something in the $20 range?
Some good ideas, thank you. He has already been hunting for years and has taken the hunter safety course. And he only hunts with his dad who is extremely careful.

jonthepain answers:

Can’t go wrong with some hunting attire. Or a nice folding hunting chair. Get him some camo or a hunting vest that should keep you under 20 bucks.

Mandy asks…

Good caliber for home protection/hunting sidearm?

Just wondering about your thoughts on whether I should go with a .40 S&W or .45. Here in Oklahoma, wild hogs have become rampant and I don’t feel safe going in to the woods in the dark with just a bow and knife (I do have a concealed carry permit). I know the 10mm or .357 mag (or bigger) would be the best for hogs, but I’m wanting a semi-automatic that I would enjoy shooting recreationally, have reasonable access to ammo, and use as a home defense weapon. I’m leaning towards the .40, but just wondering if this would be adequate. What do you think? Thanks.
I probably should have been more specific. I’m not hunting hogs, just worry about running across a sow and her babies. I know this is slim, but you never know.

jonthepain answers:

I don’t know what world “Rev” comes from, but .45acp vs. A creature that can weigh 300+ lbs. Easy isn’t exactly a good match… Well… For you anyway…

If I’m going after wild hogs… It’s going to be .44 Magnum or .45LC (not the “cowboy” loads either…) for me… And it’s going to be a wheelgun. No semi for that situation… Not going to take a chance on a jam… Especially when there’s a big, angry, hungry critter that you just made even more angry.

James asks…

To catch a predator/solicitation of a minor? Few questions..?

I watched Dateline’s(?) show called To catch a predator recently… and I wonder if they could just catch the guys before they show up at the house.

It would make the job of the officers easier, I think. I just wonder what all has to be done/said in order for their to be action taken. I understand what sexting is.. sending graphic images/videos etc. That’s obviously something that could be acted on by law enforcement without the guy trying to meet the girl.

I know that laws vary from state to state as well… but I wonder what generally has to be said/done — the minimal, before charges can be pressed. Wouldn’t it be better to catch them right away, or at least issue a serious warning? In pondering about all this, I can’t help think about Orwell’s 1984 … thought-crime. Just wondering where the line is drawn and where it should be.. but I think a slight sacrifice of privacy is worth protecting people over.

jonthepain answers:

The definition of solicitation can vary between states, so there no single answer on when it becomes illegal. In my state, as soon as you made the suggestion to do something illegal, you can be charged.

There are several reasons: they wait unit they show up at the house: The show is about entertaining the viewer than legal aspects, and it is simply more dramatic to the viewer if they show up at the house.

Secondly, it is much safer to take someone into custody if they are out of their comfort zone. Arresting them in a strange house is more tactically sound than arresting someone in their own house.

And finally, it builds a stronger case. Showing up shows much stronger intent than just sending messages.

Laura asks…

how to report online predator?

my friend got an instant message from a random person that wouldn’t leave her alone offereing her to go on a bad website for video chatting. my friend told the person she was a minor but they wouldn’t leave her alone. she doesn’t know who the person is. we tried to find a website to report them (we copy and pasted the conversation to a document and have her username) but it’s only to call in. we really want to do this online because we don’t feel comfortable calling a hot line or whatever. please help!

Good that you’re willing to report people who are just creepy and doing things that are wrong to minors.

You can use any of those websites to help you get started.

Your Questions About Predator Hunting Shows

George asks…

was there ever a predalien vs predator war ?

i just watch the last predator movie and they showed the predaliens doing the hunting instead of the actual predators . so im guesing ther is less predators.
is ther a comic or a movie coming out about them having a war against each other?

jonthepain answers:

Those weren’t predaliens. The predalien was a freak occurrence and the only one ever seen in the AvP movies was not socially structured like the regular predators…and i think it had a tail. The predators in the movie “Predators” were just a new clan or something that have apparently always existed, but never been seen before.

Jenny asks…

Predators hunting during the day?

When you watch wildlife shows you see a lot of predators such as lions that hunt during the day. Often they hunt herd of wilderbeast that number in the hundreds of thousands.

Wouldn’t it be easy pickings if they hunted at night when these animals were sleeping? It seems like a lot of work the way they stalk and chase them during the day.

jonthepain answers:

Lions do hunt at dusk, dawn, and at night. Probably the reason you see lions hunting during the day on the shows is because it is easier to film during the day than at night. By filming in the day, you don’t need the extra (and potentially expensive) stuff like night vision or thermal imaging that you would at night. You also get to see the hunt in living color as opposed to the greens & grays of night vision or thermal imaging. Check here & Wikipedia for info:
http://www.ecotravel.co.za/Guides/Wildlife/Vertebrates/Mammals/Big_5/Lion/african-lion-hunting-habits.htm

Thomas asks…

Did anyone read the Sports Illustrated article about hunting?

It was supposedly about how the decline of hunting is changing the natural order of predator and prey. It tells about 2 guys who venture out deep into the Alaska tundra without so much as a penknife for protection and are horrified when 2 wolves snarl at them. The article then shows cutzie photos of kids and families joining quail shooting organizations and other pseudo patriotic blow bambi away propaganda as if hunting were the most caring and wholesome thing since apple pie and absolutely necessary to restore order in the universe. I was both appalled and impressed by the articles extremely shrewd psychological manipulation. What do you think?

jonthepain answers:

First off thew Alaskan wilderness suffers no shortage of predators and balance is good there for herd controll.
I live in western Mi with no predators the deer herds are immense hunting is the only control.
It is not a “patriotic” thing to hunt it is a HUMAN thing we hunt for many reasons. I hunt for good corn fed steroid free venison for my family. I will shoot 5 to 7 deer this year and put up about 200 pounds of meat at a cost of about 30 cents a pound. I also love to hunt and as a Hunter i contribute FAR more money and concern for the herds and animals in general than any PETA moron. Some hunt some don’t but it seems to be OK to slam hunters as low lifes or sub human I wonder if you apply the same logic to others like minorities or gays or any other “chosen” lifestyle. I think you should just stick with the swimsuit issue it seems more to your intelligence level.

Richard asks…

another predator and prey question…?

ok, so the other day my husband and i were watching a hunting show (it comes on between my fishing shows and i was too lazy to change the channel) They were hunting reindeer in FInland… very old school, very cool.

half the hunters had cross bows, the other half had guns

my husband and i got into a discussion about their weapons of choice. HUbby is more pro bows, and i, oddly enough, was more pro guns. My theory being that a gun will more likely kill the animal faster saving it from dying slow and in pain. DH said the bow was better cause it’s more “natural”, more like the hunter gatherers would have used (had spears been an option he would have picked those)

So we talked about how we, as humans, have a special bond with animals seeing as how we as humans, are both predator and prey, we kill and would be killed thus making us able to sympathize with both the predator and the prey… and that as predators we just want the kill, but as prey we don’t want the pain that goes with it…

anyways… i know none of this is parenting related… and i don’t care… i just want to know who you agree with… are cross bows better than guns when it comes to hunting?

hunter parents… do your children hunt and would you allow them to use different methods and/or weapons (hate calling them that when hunting, but unsure what else to use) or are you only gun users?
and also, do you celebrate your kill and the life it has given for you, or is it just another dead meal (assuming you eat what you hunt)?

jonthepain answers:

Hunting is like a religion where i live. All the men and quite a few women (not me, im not getting up at 4 in the morning to sit in the cold and maybe see an animal and hope that i kill it the first attempt) take it very seriously. My family is really into hunting. They have several types of guns and 1-2 bows each. They do say they feel more proud to kill a deer with a bow because it is harder to do and takes more skill.
When they kill it they celebrate by getting on their walky talkies and congratulating each other. Then all the guys round up what they got, bring them back to the house, and bond over cutting it up to put in the coolers of ice water to get it ready to be packaged. We do eat what we hunt here.
